Is it easier to get hired in Silicon Valley than in New York (for tech jobs)?
-
New York has a larger population, so it likely has more programmers and other potential tech employees. Yet Silicon Valley has many more tech companies than New York, so it probably has more demand. Does this mean it is easier to get hired in Silicon Valley than in New York?

Answer:
Yes. It's not all about knowing how to program fancy algorithms, it's the entrepreneurial spirit, access to investors that invest in tech, etc that makes Silicon Valley what it is. It's like MIT versus Stanford versus CMU: Alumni from each have great technical chops, but Stanford has these two other qualities in its environment. Startups desperately need developers, if you have a bachelors degree and can minimally show off something you've built that matches the technical stack of a given start up, you have a good chance at getting an offer.

My best guess is that it IS easier to find a job in the Silicon Valley than in NYC, nevertheless it's hard to say for sure. A quick search for "Software Engineer" jobs in LinkedIn in San Francisco Bay Area will yield 3,842 results (link). The same search for the Greater New York City Area is barely 907 results. Nevertheless, keep in mind that the geographical area that SF Bay Area covers is much larger but at the same time, this location it attracts a lot more engineers, which might make it hard to stand out from the crowd. On the other hand, there are skills that are in higher demand in NYC, like those related to high frequency trading, that won't be as coveted anywhere else. If you are trying to decide which place to target when looking for a job, I'd recommend you forget what's "easier" and decide based on what environment you prefer. Do some research about San Francisco (and the rest of the Bay Area) and how it compares to NYC. Talk to people who've been both places. Prioritize what's important to you and focus on that.
