Well sometimes they will train you while you work there and put you on a college course. You could get an NVQ 2 in Early Years Care and Education or something similar to be qualified, this is a one year course and most of it is practical that you do on the job. An NVQ 3 is a 2 year course with a lot more work involved so it would depend on what you wanted to do. At the end of that though you are a qualified Early Years Practitioner/Nursery Nurse. This is also the equivalent of a BTEC or Cache Diploma. To do any course of this type you do need to have a placement as you need to be observed working with children and are assessed on the work you do. I'm not sure what is required for an nvq 2, but for an nvq 3 it is at least 8 hours a week, plus approx 20 hours study time and a day at college.
