  Seriation is easy. The Three Billy Goats Gruff, or The Three Bears, are good stories to introduce the activity with. Then you can begin by asking 3 children to stand up, and ask the others to help you put them in order from tallest to smallest. After that, ask 4 to stand up and do it again. Then you can give each child 3 blocks of graduated size and ask them to put the blocks in order from biggest to smallest. Then give them 4 blocks each and ask them to do it again. If you want to do shapes, make a set of "shape finders" out of oak tag or stiff cardboard. Keep it simple. Make one or two of each, circle, square, rectangle, oval, or maybe triangle. Read a book about shapes, or you could use Going on a Bear Hunt. Show the children your shape finders and explain the shapes to them. Then tell them We're going on a shape hunt! Lead them around the room and use your shape finders to locate a couple of shapes. Find the more difficult ones to give them ideas. Then if you have a larger group they can work in pairs or a smaller group can each work individually with a shape finder to locate one or two shapes in the room. Then come back to the circle area to show the whole group what they found and explain what shape it is.
