What is a day nursery about?

What would be your dream day nursery service?

  • If you could create the perfect childcare service, what features would you put in an average day at your child's nursery? As many details as possible please.

  • Answer:

A small log cabin in the middle of a forest with lots of dens and hiding places. A very high number of adults, say one for 3 children, who have no paperwork to do, so they can devote all their time to the children. No ideas thought up by teachers, but themes decided on by the children because of what interests and inspires them. People who listen to what the children say and talk to them and tell them stories. Open only 8.30 til 4.30, so that parents can't dump their children there for hours on end. Well qualified staff who are interested and involved. Lots of singing and dancing. Animals - rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and fish. A camp fire. A stream. loads of paper, paints, crayons, glue, leaves, feathers etc. trips to farms and shops and fire stations and visitors to us. Picnics.

Different rooms the children rotate around i.e. art room, building room, sensory room, housekeeping room, gross motor room, fine motor room etc. Oops they start out in a homeroom in the morning than rotate rooms./ Children are really able to EXPLORE. Great resources and manipulative's for the kids Themes based on children's interests not teachers A school that lends it's self to doing projects outside i.e. art projects and nature projects Teachers that know childcare and what is developmentally appropriate for children. Also they are there for the right reasons. Make it very hands on for the children/lots of field trips Small classes

In an ideal world space and resources obviously important; quiet and comfortable areas; free-flow between inside and out; permanent writing area; changing 'home-corner' i.e cafe or shop or vets etc; messy play area; ongoing art & craft area; sensory room/area; reading and storytime area; large indoor space/gym; kitchen and cooking area; IT and computer area; natural and environmetal area; parent zone; etc etc. A whole range of ongoing, and one off, activities that are fully based in the children's ideas, interests and developing skills but which also have regard for the EYFS. But apart from all of that the most important resource of all...caring, patient, talented, inspired, approachable, skilled, dedicated, open-minded, diligent, aware, loving staff. Who are keen to continue learning and are reflective in their practice. And possibly even more important than that managers who are able to lead, and diseminate good practice and are fully able to monitor and evaluate the service they provide objectively in order to sustain best practice and develop the service further.

Lots of free play time, but with some prep for kindergarten Make naptime optional Crafts My daughter's nursery school does this now, and I love it: Every week, there's a theme. For example, last week was "job week" Every Monday, they discuss the theme, and then give the kids "homework". It comes home in their folder, with instructions and supplies. Last week's activity was to make paper dolls that have clothing you can switch out. The folder came stocked with a bunch of pieces of paper to cut out and color. Then my daughter could match up the doctor's bag with the doctor's coat and put it on top of a paper doll. She really loved it and I enjoyed learning about what she was doing in school. The homework isn't due at any time, and kids can keep it at home if they want. The homework comes in one of those manila folders with the little bendy clasp that keeps everything inside. Her teacher also includes notes for the parents in the folder, telling us any difficulties the kids are having that week.
