Work experience at a nursery?

I'm doing my Work Experience in a Nursery?

  • I was just wondering what I'll be doing :] It's briefly explained on the letter I was given, but have any of you ever had work experience in a nursery? I'd like to know ...show more

  • Answer:

You'll work with small groups of children (with a qualified practitioner always in the same room/close to you). You may be asked to prepare displays of the children's work, tidy up, help prepare for the next session, make juice/pour milk for the children at snack time. You won't be asked to do anything personal with the children, such as taking them to the toilet, cleaning up bodily fluids, changing them if they have an accident, etc. It will mainly be 'odd' jobs & some group/1:1 work with the children. Have fun!

A lot of playing, washing hands, wiping faces. I was doing only 6 hour days and was exhausted by the time I got home. Good luck (:

It is great, the only problem with me is that sometimes I have to leave aside my inner child and behave like a teacher, being a role model all the time and discipline them. And sometimes they don't want to play with you since you are not their age but you could find yourself very keen to play with them. just need to hold back and observe them.

Domestically Disabled

depends on the nursery really... i have done work placements in 2 nurseries. one let me do everything near enough. meeting and greeting, changing nappies, feeding, sleep time etc... the other was alot stricter. and wasnt allowed to do nappies, feed them or do handover. alot of places wont let you do nappies or be alone with the children.. so you would do things like, help with snack/meal times, play with the children, do singing, read stories.. hope you enjoy it!

Working in a nursery: You will probably see a large dry erase board and every time a baby poops, eats an ounce, or does anything exciting, like look at him/herself in a mirror, you will document it. Every poop, an X. Every Ounce of milk, an X. Parents rely on this information to know what is going on with their child while they are away. Start looking for books for infants and create some lesson plans for babies.

presumably you will be working with the children who attend Also you may be involved in planning, writing up observations, completing various forms, meeting and greeting the parents Really everything that childcare involves
