Ideally you will need some experience in a school but having nursery experience is no bad thing. Start reading up on issues in early years - the times educational supplement is a good start.

If you have a degree, as you have, you can train to be an Early Years Professional. Have a look at www.bestpracticenet.co.uk or the childcare workforce development council (www.cwdc.gov) which explains this qualifiaction further. You will probably have to do the 'full pathway' which involves placements and meeting 39 standards, but there is a lot of government funding available for graduates who want to work in early years settings. By 2015 all early years settings will need an EYP, and it doesn't look as though there'll be enough to go round, so it's a good qualification to get. Good luck :-)

I think that the experience that you had within a nursery would count towards something like this. When you have had the baby, or even when you're pregnant, I would go and volunteer with some preschool children, or with some kindergarten class, and help them with reading, or just spending some time with them, and then you will also have some practical experience in this area as well, and that will make it a bit better for the experience area.

First off, you need to have a degree relevant to teaching before you can apply for a PGCE, secondly, they are very difficult to get, my friend has been knocked back four years running for one. Maybe you could take a part time degree in order to get a correct degree and then think about the PGCE afterwards. Good luck! x
