Answer:
I've worked in one and my children go to one. I have seen, was expected to, and as a parent expect staff to dress smartly. so jeans to me arent acceptable. no jewellry other than small studs if you really must, a watch and a wedding band. health and safety. make up, minimal. dont take it with you unless you're putting your bag in a locker or high shelf as that comes under cosh for dangerous substances, again health and safety. you may be trusted by the staff, but the parents want to know good, decent people are working with their kids, so look smart, mature and not like a 15 year old school girl for once!

Hi, In my experience dress codes vary greatly between settings so your best bet is to give the setting a quick ring and ask. I'm sure that they'll think more of you for taking the initiative and you'll turn up on your first day feeling confident that you've presented yourself in a way which is acceptable to them.

I am doing my college placement in a nursery and i wear an old pair of black trousers or combats as they can get paint on etc and just an ordinary top but not too low cut. In this weather i also take a jacket as it can get quite cold. Shoes wise i think you can wear any but think that you my have to go outside in the cold or rain. Keep make up to a minimum but you can still wear foundation, blusher and mascara etc. Just tie your hair back as you will be bending down all day and it will get in your way and i wouldnt wear any jewellery as at nursery age they still like to pull on things. Hope this helps

1. Observe what the other staff wear and dress accordingly. You should be just fine in dark casual slacks or even jeans (grape juice stains!!) and a polo-type shirt. Keep your shirts on the conservative side--avoid low scooped necklines, ultra-tight fitting garments, etc. [Do remember to wear proper "foundation" garments!] Colors that look good on you are a plus--remember, you're working with children, so you want to be bright and cheerful. You need to be able to get down on the floor comfortably with the little people, so avoid anything that is too binding. Whatever you wear, it needs to be washable. You'd be surprised what you can get into working with kids...I would not wear anything that requires special care when laundering or even a lot of ironing. As for shoes, I'd wear clean tennis shoes--they are comfortable and support your feet and they generally don't slip on linoleum floors. 2. Be clean and neat at all times...clothes, hair, makeup, etc. If you have long hair, keep it contained. Little ones like to grab at hair when it hangs down, and unless you like having your hair pulled or full of "interesting" substances, I'd keep it back. A simple braid can take care of long hair fairly quickly. 3. I agree that you want to look "professional", but obviously a skirt-and-jacket suit just doesn't fit this kind of job. Do check ahead of time if you can and find out what others are wearing and match that example. Your work clothes need to be functional for the job you are doing and allow you free range of movement. As the weather cools down, you may want to add a light cardigan or hoodie-type sweater or sweatshirt to your outfit so that you can be warm. Have fun with this! Working with the children can be a very rewarding experience.

if they said black trousers, i wouldn't go for jeans. if their running around you want to be wearing something comfortable. also, don't wear a lot or any jewellery because the children will latch onto it and anything nice will be ruined. flat pumps are your best bet as they will be comfortable and safe around children. you should keep your hair out of your face and tied back so you don't get things like paint in it. basically just make sure you're comfortable or else you'll get really tired out.

Personally I would not wear jeans on work experience - not on the first day anyway, wait and see what others are wearing. A pair of black trousers is fine, shoes should be flattish, and if they are trainers make sure they are reasonably smart - no great thick soles etc. Tie your hair back or it will get in the way. Minimum jewellery for the same reason - babies love grabbing dangly earrings. Minimum make up also. Tops - nothing too outrageous. A plain t shirt or sweatshirt should be fine. Hope you enjoy your experience.

for my daughters first day when she did work experience she wore black trousers (like school trousers) and a polo shirt/tshirt (white any colour) glad she did though she was covered in paint she had her hair tied back not too much makeup and only wore her earrings and watch wait untill youve got past the first day and see what the others wear, flat shoes is a good one coz ur gonna be busy have a great time it gets you outa school and into the adult working world with no homework lol
