How do I purchase tickets with a family railcard online?

If Im using a 16-25 student railcard. Can I purchase tickets on the train using the discounts it offers ?

  • Answer:

You will find that most train operators will operate a Penalty Fares scheme in which you MUST buy a ticket or Permit to Travel before boarding the train. Really you should do this (if facilities are available) regardless of whether penalty fares operate or not, and then pay the guard or maybe Revenue Inspector or ticket office at destination the difference. But to answer the question, on most services you can if staff exist, but you will find that 16-25 discounts may NOT be available to buy on board most Intercity services (the Guard / Train Manager / Conductor should announce this). East Coast I know for certain operate this policy so be warned. I can't even buy staff rate tickets on them either! But remember, if facilities exist at your origin station, you MUST buy either of the aforementioned tickets.

Only if there is genuinely no way to purchase a ticket at the station. Being formally advised which stations have limited or no ticket purchase facilities is part of an inspector's daily routine, and so he normally knows if a passenger is lying

Only if you board at a station where the ticket office/machine is unavailable (e.g. closed or broken). Note that a minimum fare applies before 10 am (I think), so you'll not get full Railcard benefits until after that time.
