Your question demonstrates your confusion about what is a bus route and what is a train route. Your trip requires you to take two busses and a train, or two trains and a bus, depending on the schedule. Rather than require you to schedule both on your own, Amtrak has provided a very helpful itinerary service which matches busses to trains, sort of like a guaranteed connection although you may be responsible for your own luggage and walking from bus platform to train platform, which is usually a go with the flow kind of maneuver but you want to be paying attention to the driver in order to not miss your transfer. These busses can sell out so that's why it's important to book a ticket in advance, and your BF was very thoughtful to do that. St Pete to Tampa is what's called a "Thruway Bus Connection" route which means the train doesn't go as far as to/from St Pete, but they are able to sell bus tickets as part of a total package. They don't allow people to buy such tickets to go short distances, they are only for use to connect to a train destination, such as Savannah in your case. Furthermore, Jacksonville to Miami portion of the train is currently under construction (late 2012) and some portions of the route it looks like have been replaced by busses on a temporary basis. Depending on which date you travel, this may even mean you get on another 5 hour bus from Tampa up to Jacksonville that ordinarily would have been serviced by a train. However, your ticket will still contain a train ride from Jacksonville the rest of the way to Savannah at least. If it looks like Amtrak has given you a bus ticket, it is because they have in fact done so. See the article for a map of Amtrak Thruway Services or see amtrak.com for more information. If you go on amtrak.com and book a trip from St. Pete to Savannah you may see the service alert which may describe the bus being a temporary service from Miami to Jacksonville (including Tampa).

The ticket should have an itinerary that tells the details, but if not, then just call the station or travel agency that booked it. AmTrack can extend their service with their own buses or use Greyhound buses, so their is no way to know without asking. Since train tracks don't go everywhere, there is no other alternative.
