How did the Transcontinental Railroad Work?

If you work on the railroad how long do you have to be away at a time?

  • My boyfriend is graduating soon and going to work for the railroad. Just trying to get the specifics!

  • Answer:

It's not as bad as a long haul trucker where they are gone for weeks at a time. Unless he is forced to an outlying terminal and has to change locations he can typically expect to be gone a day and a half to two days on a road trip. And like Andy says, home can vary from federal minimum of 10 hours to a bit longer. There is a definite downside but you can adapt, it will take some effort from both of you. Good Luck and congratulations on the job!

Other answers

Rango and Andy, being engineers on Class 1 railroads, are assuming you are talking about engineers (or conductors) jobs. However, there are many other jobs "on the railroad", so, if you want specifics, I suggest you BE specific. For example, track crew on a regional or shortline railroad may not necessarily need to be away overnight at all.
