How do you become a locomotive engineer in Amtrak?

Does Amtrak or Union Pacific rail require you to have a drivers license to become a locomotive engineer.?

  • Answer:

The FRA requires submission of driving record for licensing purposes and license renewal for locomotive engineers. If you can't handle an automobile, best to leave railroading to someone who can. Besides. How are you going to get to work a 3:30 in the morning?

No drivers license is required to operate a locomotive. To become an engineer requires many, many hours of experience. If you apply for employment they will give you the criteria. Start at the bottom and work up.
