    Impossible to drive a train. You can't be a train driver but you could be a conductor.

The engineer is in charge of the engines.The conductor is in charge of the train.The train can't move without the engines.The engines can move without the train.Do the math.All major carriers require you to hire in as a conductor.ALL OF THEM.If you get to go to engineer school within a year you are extremely lucky.It took me 6 and half years to get to go.

Anyone who works for the most RR co's. Can usually get promoted from within. As the last guy said, most(not all) start as a conductor. The conductor is actually the foreman of the train. The engineer technically works for him. Bit the engineer makes more money and thinks he's in charge. I started working on the steel gang laying track and was promoted from within. College is NOT necessary.

Went to college for five years to become an engineer. Never did learn to drive train ! Knew I should have became a conducter.
