How much are new trucks?

How much more or less often are trucks used than freight trains?

  • How much more or less often are trucks used than freight trains, and how can I find some type of chart showing the use of each over the past year/few years?

  • Answer:

I believe currently in the united states over 51% of goods are shipped by train. Thats a pretty large amount. Shipping by train in quantity and tonnage wise is on the increase. Number of miles of trackage being operated is on the decrease (250,000 miles 50 years ago, 100,000 miles today). But because the Department of Commerce looks at amount of tonnage instead of amount of miles, ultimately freight trains are used more and are ever increasing.

I don't know of any chart. But i can tell you Bryan K is wrong.Freight train traffic is on the increase not a decrease. It's cheaper to ship by train than by truck.

A rule of thumb that by no means is anything official, at least that any company will admit... Under 500 miles shipper to reciever, goes by truck. Over 500 miles, is somewhat close to an intermodal hub and is not time critical, a trailer or container will be transported by train. Overall, it is about time the railroads and over-the-road companies got their collective acts together and figured this out. It is logical that railroads are not suited for local delivery and darn stupid to see semis driving 1000's of miles with a single load.

Rail freight in the United States on a ton-mile basis is I believe around 40%. Trucking is around 30%. Revenue-wise, trucking earns much more than rail. About 80% truck to 10% rail. I believe this is mainly because rail is used for lower value raw materials and semi-finished product whereas trucking moves most of the higher end finished product either directly or through intermodal (piggyback and container). Freight trains are in no way shape or form about to dissapear in North America. Actually, the small, independent truckers (not so much the big guys like Swift, JB Hunt etc...) who are the endangered species these days....

its in the 40% and is falling the last i heard( a month a ago) by chart you might want to use a freight transportion chart and trucks are used a little more but trucks suck compared to trains

freight trains are not used much any more and will fade away some day, over the last 20 years freight trains went down over 50% and trucks went up over 50%,reason it cost more to ship by train a truck has to go pick it up from the train, ive never heard of a chart mabe some one else will
