One of the most common rail steel types is R350HT, for a lifetime of over 30 years on mixed traffic lines. It consists of iron with the additional elements: 0.72-0.80% C, 0.15-0.58% Si, 0.70-1.20% Mn, <0.020% P, 0.08-0.025% S, <0.15% Cr, <0.02% Mo, <0.10% Ni, <0.030% V, <0.004% Al. For additional durability the head is specially hardened, to a tensile strength of 1175 N/mm². The basic tensile strength in the non-hardened areas is 880 N/mm². For heavy haul there are specialized steels of even greater strength, such as the 400UHC (hypereutectoid rail steel). The rail must say "B. no problem at all" - otherwise it would be weakened by every train, which would not be safe!

Definetly not cast iron.cast iron is too brittle.I don't know the exact type but a high quality carbon steel would be more in the ball park.

I would say 440 bar steel but i am not sure. But 440 is very hard.

Wulfgar

I would assume that it would be of a high quality steel.
