No, Not at all. Indian Railways at the moment is the one of the best rail network. In the past 5 years the railways is putting every effort of making it a clean and better experience for the passengers. And the effort is now very much visible. There are different categories in most of the trains .. 1st Class AC, 2nd Class AC and 3rd Class AC, if you travel in these classes you will have the best experience. They will provide you bedsheets, blankets etc.. for best sleeping experience. More clean and hygienic experience. The 1st Class AC apart from the above will provide you a complete privacy for couples also. Its a compartment type Suites. Also to note that the cost of the above categories are way less and much affordable for the common person, i.e it is well in reach with the common man. Apart from the above 3 categories, the next category to come is the Sleeper Class, where you will not be provided with any bed sheets and the bogies are non AC. But still the bogey will be very neat and clean. The trains are very much clean and good for long journey, a person will definitely enjoy the trip. hope this helps you in making ur decision. My best suggestion to you, that please try for once, and go for 3rd Class AC compartment if it is not possible for you to go above it. All seats you have to reserve in advance, apart from that if you have no time, there is a Tatkal Service available from the Indian railways which gives you the luxury of making reservation within very short span of time. No, I don't think so. The sub-urban trains are a bit over crowded. But then everything is crowded in India. The Railway Board tries it's level best to keep the trains and the stations as clean as possible, but it's the travelers who make it look horrible.

you are absolutely wrong as Indian Railways ranks somewhere near 5th or the 6th position in world and its one of the largest railways as we dont have many fast trains like bullet Maglev,etc But then too we have Shatabdi Express, Rajdhani which is the most luxuries train in India. And we have very good technology in railways to travel in Indian railways is one of the safest in case of accidents. So Indian railways is not at all horrible its developing and one day it will be the best and that day is not so far........

India Trains are good they are reliable and are normally on time. as far as quality is concerned looking at the fare and population Trains are in good shape particularly higher class like AC shatabdi and Rajdhani. Even ordinary sleeper class is good.

actually speaking; No; since i'm used to. i guess thats the state for many as we are all used to the standards that we can expect in our railways; compared to 2nd sleeper; AC coaches, specifically 2nd and 1st AC are far better; pay more and get better service.

i have not faced any horrible experience, but its better than few other countries

check out the rajdhani express . it is terribly good.
