I'm a 24-year-old female engineer from Bangalore and I think I am wasting my life. What do I do next?

To elaborate my problem, i really don't understand the concept of "Get married,Make kids,Work your ass off for their education, Work for 15 years to buy a car/home" I mean seriously. I know every person earns basic amenities in life but no one should be forced to do that. I certainly believe in marriage and i feel like people should be married when they feel like getting married. Coming back to my question? What to do with life? I'm certainly not good at coding and i feel like i'm wasting my life in coding. I sometimes write and i would love to travel. But every tom, dick and harry is writing in this country and i don't know how that would make a good career. Also about travelling, being born in India, even stepping the boundary of the house causes serious panic attacks to my family members. This is the problems i'm facing. Please do help. EDIT: Okay, Big news to share here. I'm removing my anonymity. So I have posted this question almost 6 months back and I wasn't sure on what to do with my life. I stumbled upon questions and for sad part noone of my friends were able to understand me. I got some very good answers here. And the good part is I have started following them too. For my birthday I even solo travelled to Bhutan. You can read about it all here >> https://medium.com/@maryzareah/how-i-braved-instincts-and-set-my-foot-in-bhutan-4f098e6c7b17 And I'm taking photographs and writing a lot. I even started writing a novel. Have no idea whether I will finish it but I'm confident enough that I will pursue my dreams. Right now still stuck in my dead end job , but keeping it because I live in a big city and gradually planning to quit it. So thanks a lot everyone, for your wonderful time, your wonderful answers and super cool advices. I love you all Cheers!! M

Let me break down my advice in four parts : 1. Career advice : Do what you love and be the best in doing it. No matter what career you choose there is always going to be tough competition but there will also be an opportunity to do well regardless of competition. Loving your job will make things a little bit easier. When you enjoy your work, it ain't work anymore. 2. Relationship advice : Marry when you want to marry with a guy you want to marry and who wants to marry you. Think more about getting a companion for your journey of life. See if you and that guy get along well and can be together in good and bad times. See if you both have same outlook towards life. This is going to be tough but worth trying. 3. Dealing with objections of family : If stepping out of your house causes panic attacks to your family members then it means they love you and are worried about you. May be they are worried a little more than required. Talk to them. Ask them why they are worried. What are they afraid of? Talk about your perspective about life and what you want to do with it. Seek solutions for various issues and problems. Make them believe that you will be able to deal with various problems that life will throw at you. Earn their trust. 4. Life advice : Find joy in your life and bring joy to other's life. Seriously, what else are we supposed to do? Isn't it simple? You are just 24 years old, young and raring(pun intended) to go. I would suggest you to explore life. Life is made of moments and the moment about to come is as important as moment that will come when you will be 60 years old. So instead of wasting this moment worrying about future or thinking how to acquire material possessions that you don't need, use it to create experiences that you will cherish later in your life.

... problem comes with your thinking ... thinking that you are a woman. ... just think you are a human being and God has given you a body and a brain ... use your energies and intelligence as you think is wise! ... you will rise ... you will grow ... the world would see ... nothing succeeds like Success ... you have all that you need within you ... ... your success ... your family ... your society ...will shape as you mould it ... as you dream them !!!

I'm sorry but I am giving a very harsh answer: You are afraid of failure in writing career? That's a possibility. A high possibility. But by not trying that possibility is 100%. Imagine that: No chance that you're gonna see world change with your words. No chance that you make the world a happier place. So the only thing you can do is TRY! It's logical. Contains no "heart" BS.

I think i know what you are up with. I am a guy studying Comp sc, and will be graduating next year to get a boring job. It has been an year since my blunt brain and my gloomy heart are playing ping pong with each other about what to do with life. Job, Post grad, MBA, IAS nothing seems like a good idea. A lot of self introspection and discovery led to myself concluding that my life is in dire need of a motive. A lot of options wandered into my mind: 1. Travel blog 2. Photography 3. Joining an NGO 4. Starting a dhaba and a lot of vague others But in the end i picture myself in a cozy little house hillside, having a couple of dogs, a musical instrument, some good reads, and a proficiency in cooking. That is my dream and it keeps me going. Writing is a really budding prospect. There are many people out there, but hey, this is India, there will be many of us everywhere(after all there are a billion of us). What any writer needs is to create his/her space out there by picking on some specifications. Pick up a unique and intriguing genre. Most of the Indian Toms and Harrys are still stuck in cheesy fiction. Being an Indian, i know that life in India is strict. Family and societal bindings hurt more than they protect. I really don't know how things are at your side, so there is not much that i can do in that. Try travelling with friends if that makes your parents comfortable. Try gaining their confidence. Break free if needed. PS: Joining an NGO is a legit idea. Some NGOs station you at really picturesque places.

If you suck at coding then why did you choose this job in the first place?? Remember the reason and try sticking to it. But if you think that as a mistake then definitely take some time out, try finding your passion, calculate how following your passion affects your life financially, socially and emotionally. Think about how bad you want it . Then just make a decision and try sticking to it keeping in mind that you couldn't stick to the previous one. This will take some time. May be by that time you will be mentally ready for marriage :p

Happiness is in the journey not the destination. It works pretty well for me. Set some short/long term goals for you and work hard to achieve them, you wont have much time to get bored or think about your not so charming life. Social/family responsibilities can't be avoided completely, but that doesn't mean you get entangled to it. Let it go on and in the mean time follow your dreams, enjoy the journey.

If you are confused so much, you should try my way. Make a bucket list of things that you don't want to do for next month, next year, next five years, next ten years. It helps people who are stuck in boundaries, people who don't have many choices because this list will let you eliminate all possible scenarios which you don't want.
