How much do commercial helicopter pilots earn?

Why do helicopter pilots crash so much more often than fixed-wing aircraft pilots?

  • For example, the US military has lost way more soldiers since 2001 to helicopter crashes than fixed-wing wrecks. The latest was today, when a US military HH-60G Pave Hawk based at ...show more

"For example, the US military has lost way more soldiers since 2001 to helicopter crashes than fixed-wing wrecks" fail. comparing incomparable "chopper pilots have so much trouble keeping their birds in the air" no. we're just operating lower and slower, IN sticky weather rather than climbing over it, and WE fly the rescue missions which is why sometimes stuff like your link happens. "What sort of training/education should they be given to bring their performance up to fixed-wing standards" i'm taking this personally. there's no education that can make you tougher than Earth.. short of cloning Chuck Norris. helicopters are NOT less stable and they do NOT fall of skies if engines die. the fact you CHILDREN cannot wrap your head around autorotation, does not make it nonexistent - or more dangerous than gliding the plane to ground. yes, you have but one try.. same goes for glider landings. at ZooDoo.. when "the rotors stop spinning" we're indeed screwed... like a pilot gliding a plane without wings. the rotors DON'T stop spinning if the engine dies. read the comment on children above.

there's much more to go wrong on a helicopter, and they don't exactly glide too well

When helicopters lose power, they drop straight down. All fixed wing aircraft can glide without power for awhile. The best example is the US Air pilot who put his commercial jet down in the Hudson River without hurting anyone.

cause flying a helicopter is harder and they don't have a scientific principle holding them up.....basically once those rotors stop spinning/creating lift you are generally screwed, whereas fixed wing aircraft can still glide/fly as long as the whole aircraft is going fast enough to generate lift

It is because they take more risks. Medievacs have to fly and land in weather and terrain are dangerous but unavoidable.

As the other answers have previously stated, helicopters tend to be pretty bad a gliding, but due to their role in the military (troop insertions, evacuations, close air support), they're also much more susceptible to small arms fire and RPG attacks as they usually fly slower and lower than fixed-wing aircraft.

Consider helicopter flight similar to riding on a Zip Wire. If the vertical wire from the seat to the travelling wire (Lift) breaks, you hit the ground. If the travelling wire (foward thrust) breaks, you hit the ground. Both lift and thrust are produced by mechanical means,(Engine, gearbox, rotating blades, drive shafts, etc) A small fault in a bearing,a gear wheel, metal fatigue, or a fuel pipe breaking, can result in hitting the ground. This doesn't take into consideration any human error. Helicopters are accidents just waiting to happen.

If they're in a war because they're alot slower they are easier to shoot down.

(1) A helicopter is dependent on many more moving parts to stay in the air. Failure of any of the parts will cause a crash, since helicopters do not glide. (2) Helicopters do not glide, they crash. They can "autorotate" which is a fancy term for "crash land" but it is NOT gliding. If an airplane's engine fails, it (hopefully) glides to an airport. If a helicopter's engine fails, it falls out of the sky. (3) Helicopters tend to operate in places and situations airplanes will not or cannot be operated in, like slow, hovering landings and takeoffs, where they are more susceptible to malfunctions and damage.
