    Check the transmission Oil level with engine running. Check that the selector and linkages are ok. If the above are ok then ready yourself for a very expensive bill. Found a common fault which may be the problem. All models with AF23/AF33 transmission. Problem Slight loss of coolant. Sediment in coolant expansion tank. Occasional loss of drive. Trouble codes stored: P0700, P0715, P0720. Cause Failure of oil cooler sealing ring. Remove black cover from transmission valve body. If water or white sediment are found in the cover, replace transmission and oil cooler. Good luck.

Check the fluid,it should be a good cherry red colour and smell ok (compare the smell and look to new fluid),if it's dark and smells bad the box is shot,burnt clutches/bands and if it is go to your local independant specialist but hold your breath,it'll cost big time.

THIS FAULT IS USUALLY CAUSED BY CONSTANT ABUSE.Hanging in gear whilst stationary,overheating and burning out the thrust bearing.It is always best to knock it out of drive until you move off again,prolonged drive engagement whilst stationary can do a lot of harm over a period of time and is a very bad and expensive driving habit.Normally,if treated right,there are no real faults with an auto box,it should last the life of the car if treated correctly.Take it to an auto trans., specialist,this is very often a better bet than the dealer.
