  • Answer:

The only smoke test I know is to look for leaks on a saxophone. You inhale as much of a cigarette that your can, plug the horn and blow smoke through it. Leaks will show in the valves. The leak you have is in your vacuum system. I don't know how a "smoke test" will find that leak unless someone is "blowing smoke up your a$$" You are just going to have to manually inspect every inch of your vacuum lines. You can also purchase a small vacuum pump to connect to your vacuum system plugging any hoses to the manifold. Now that I think of it, you could blow smoke into one of the manifold hoses and look for leaks that way. Personally, I think it is unhealthy. If you get cancer, who would you sue?

Well usually its the gas cap that leaks. Also, a word of warning, I have some people buy those cheap aftermarket gas caps & they still cause an issue. After they bought a GM fuel cap, no more problems. But cant say for certain this will fix it or not but you have to eliminate the obvious first. What we do is we connect a machine to the Evap system & it injects smoke into the lines. Then using a Tech 2 scan tool or one close to it, you have to actually command the system to seal it self & than you just try & hope you can pinpoint the smoke coming out somewhere on the vehicle. It isn't as easy as it sounds. It can be a pain to trace down. I have done quite a few myself but I like the clowns above comments about this. None of them have actually worked on cars in their life it seems. Not sure where Mike has worked on cars but there are quite a few lines that really accessible to spray anything on but sure, go ahead & listen to his comment. Because we do get cars in with Evap leaks & not sure what the crap Mike is talking about but I have never ever seen a dryrotted plastic line in my life on a 2008 Cadillac. Also, you cannot put air in the system if you do not close the vent valve with a scan tool since it wont do anything but allow the air to escape through the vent valve, again something some people post on here that have no freakin clue on what they are doing. Not sure about Patrick either but GM/Kent Moore created a Evap cart that you actual use to inject the chemical that creates the smoke in the lines
