Premium fuel for a 2000 pontiac bonneville ssei?

  • i own a 2000 pontiac bonneville ssei. i put regular fuel in it. but i hear it is recomended that you use premium fuel because of the supercharger. can anyone tell if this is true? and ...show more

  • Answer:

Any Automobile that recommends Premium fuel should be driven with premium fuel! As far as performance is concerned, if you reduce the Octane Rating on a fuel,(Regular usually has a rating of 87 Octane Premium has a rating of 91) this increases the chance of detonation/ping ,when this occures then the Knock sensor will indicate knock and your computer will retard engine timing to counteract the ping. So performance is effected. Due to the increase in detergents in Premium gas, GM recommends that you switch to 87 Octane fuel once every 3 tank fulls. this will reduce the build up on fuel injectors. Excluding: Supercharged Engines. Happy trails

Read up on fuel dynamics especially the part about octane levels and it's role in fuel. Higher compression engines typically need more octane to control the rate of the flame front once ignited. Performance helped? Yes, as it keeps Internal engine damage from occurring.

Troof. But, use regular if you want an engine with roasted pistons. I've seen a few Supercharged Rivieras with bum engines because of that. Your call.
