Pontiac trans am or firebird.?

  • What was your favorite year and model. I like pretty much any trans am or high end firebird from 1970-1978. Also which year had electric windows and also would these cars make a good ...show more

  • Answer:

actually the 77' and up with the Oldsmobile motors were damn good cars, there is nothing wrong with the Olds motors at all, in fact they were more powerful and had more torque than the Pontiac motors, and out of all my years dealing with Firebirds and Trans ams I've never heard of an Oldsmobile motor coming from the factory with an aluminum intake??? The more powerful Trans Ams were the early 70's. Pre- 72' in fact, 72 is when all cars had to go to the smog heads, smaller valves, smaller ports, all that good stuff. If your looking at a pre-72 model your looking at some serious money. All of these cars from 69' to 81' are becoming highly collectible and sought after. Also, they had power window options all the way back to the 69' Trans Ams. Alot of people got caught up in the frenzy at first when they put the Olds motors in them, but got over it quick when the olds cars ran away from the Pontiac cars, but for some the olds was accepted graciously. I for one cannot stand a Chevy motor being put into one, that yanks my chain.

The earlier models such as 70-73 will probably run more money, assuming all are equal condition. I also agree to stay away from the Olds engines. Pontiac pulled a fast one there and never told people what engine they were stuffing in them. Consequently, people were upset. Most thought they were buying a true Pontiac and getting an Olds powered Pontiac. Anyway, a friend of mine had a 76 back in 1979 with a 400cu.in. engine and it was nice. Had power windows. It handled great, cornered flat, even by todays standards. Much nicer than a 70 model. Engine compartment is cramped, but things are a lot simpler on them than today.

I'll go one more year, up to 1976. Avoid the 1977 and up models that had Oldsmobile 6.6 engines. They are prone to cracking of the aluminum intake manifold. Check with your insurance before you buy, you might get a rude suprise.
