1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am V.S 1977 Pontiac Firebird Formula???

  • Okayy so my dad has owned a 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am for over 20 years. We are in the process of fixing it up. Just the other day we saw one in the paper, but it was a ...show more

1st question- are they rust buckets? Down south, we don't mess with rust, but up north they do. If they are both decent, neither car should be the parts car for the other. Both have REAL value, and I agree with all said above. The Formula is rarer, but the Smokey and the Bandit T/As have love everywhere. Pro Touring is so big, I would not worry about the numbers matching if your only choice is having to put an olds motor or 301 in either of them. T/A 6.6 is the coolest, and you can still find a 455 for them, which would make it faster. There is no way the Smokey and the bandit car had a stock 403 or 400 smog motor in it, they upgraded, ditch the smog and build a runner.

Trans Am all the way!! The price on this 2nd gen birds is going up so fast! Have you seen the Year One Reynolds Edition T/A? Everyone wants one!...hmmm..smokey and the bandit! Eventually Formula birds would go up, but its going to take a while. Nothing special about the Olds engine in the bird.

Yea, the guy selling the car will say a lot of things... The Formula is a bit rarer, but the T/A is more desireable. That really is the bottom line. Since I don't know why you're restoring the cars, I can't offer any advice on which way you should go. good luck!

The Trans Am is obviously better, in that it cost more. The value of a Trans Am today is about twice the value of an identically equipped Formula. 1977 Formulas were available with engines ranging from a 2-barrel 301 or (After April 1) 2-barrel Chevy 305 up to a W72 Pontiac 400.

Fix up the Trans AM. It will be worth more money. Most parts are interchangeable. After all they are basically the same car with the exception of trim bits and some suspension goodies. I doubt that the Trans Am has a 305. It will have one of the larger displacement V8's.

Technically speaking the Formula would be worth more in the end if it is a numbers matching car because they're rare. The Trans Am's are a dime a dozen. The Trans Am and Formula were choked by emissions and neither were rated anyware near that horse power. The 455 or 6.6L Trans Am's were only rated at 180 horse power though they felt like much more due to the pulse pounding torgue.
