Can you drink aloe vera straight from the plant?

I know that there are tons of uses for aloe Vera and tons of juices and gels that use aloe Vera, but can you drink it from the plant?

I just mixed a decent jigger sized amount of aloe vera goop with water.. man it tastes like poison bandaids from hell but I felt something weird after.. it was a slight healthy sensation. I liked it..
