What are the Pros and Cons of being against Mercury Pollution?

Mercury Cougar Pros and Cons?

  • I'm thinking about buying a 1999 or 2000 Mercury Cougar and I wanted some input from people who have owned one. Would you recommend it or not?

  • Answer:

I have a '97 Thunderbird; which is known for being the Ford counterpart to Mercury's Cougar. Since this is the first car I have owned, I can't say that it is better than any other car, but I can say that I have had only a few problems in the year and a half I have owned it, and most of them were because I'm a dumbass. other than that, if you keep up the maintenance (oil, sparks, tires, b-pads, etc) its really a great car. Best wishes; Happy shopping :D

DO NOT GET THIS CAR I currently own a 1999 Cougar, and it is AWFUL. I take really good care of it, but it keeps falling apart. I tried selling it for a while, but no one wanted it, so I've given up. Cons: - back seats are really uncomfortable - I find the seats in the front to be really bad, they hurt my lower back - the tires it takes are rare. Only one or two companies produce them, and to replace two tires its around ~$250 -300 vs many cars where you can replace all four for that price - the cup holder sometimes flips itself over and spills stuff on you - if you like outdoor activities, forget trying to fit friends and gear into this car - I find it handles bad in weather (rain, snow, ice) and do not feel safe driving fast in this car. - not very good gas mileage Problems: -constantly replacing tires. After getting multiple alignments, I was told something must be wrong with the front end that causes the tires to wear so fast, but no one knows what. - alternator just went in mine. ~$350 to fix it - blower for heat stopped working - a/c stopped working - car needs new starter and flywheel (~$600 to fix, so I havnt done it. Its really embarrassing when it makers horrid sounds and wont start) - speakers kick in and out - occasionally car shuts itself off when driving, and brakes and steering lock. its scary, even though it only lasts a few seconds. Pros: - it is cheap to buy (but expensive to maintain) - for a coupe, it has a lot of trunk space - it has a decent pickup for passing or merging onto the highway - large windshield, rear window, and side windows make it easy to see Hope this helps you make the right choice!

Let's see... I bought a used 2000 Mercury Cougar. Within 6 months I had to replace my fuel pump. Within a year, I had to replace the transmission (there was a small leak unnoticeable to me due to the fact I lived at an apartment at the time and never parked in the same place). Then my fuel injector broke again, and I found out it was on recall (the first one that broke, they replaced it with the same recalled model). Then I had an electrical shortage and had to walk 16 miles home. It would run out of gas even before my gas light came on. I couldn't wait to unload this thing...I traded it in even though I was upside down. I looked at it as a lesson learned! I now have a Ford Focus and have been driving it for 3 years no problem. My husband has a Grand Prix, no problems. I have seen Chevy trucks that are 20 years have less problems than that Mercury.
