Snorkeling: Water In Mask?

  • So, I have a question about water running into my mask while I am snorkeling. I've only been snorkeling once. We went to the local sports store, tried on masks, and off we went on ...show more

  • Answer:

    1) Just relax and breath though your mouth and the snorkel 2) Do not use nose plugs you need to be able to breath out into the mask when you need to If you get water in the mask, just gently press the top in towards your forehead and breath out into the mask. The increase in pressure pushes the water out of the mask downwards. When trying on masks. Place the mask on your face. DO NOT use the strap. Breath in slightly through your nose and let go the mask. It should stay on your face, If it falls off it is not sealed. If you are not too confident get a Snorkel vest to start with. The other trick I use is to put a smear of Silicone grease. (DO NOT use Vaseline as it rots the seal) round the seal before snorkeling as it just acts as a sealant. I have a moustache and it leaks a bit there if I an not careful. The last advice is talk to your local dive centre. Many will do a snorkeling lesson for you and then you can practise in the pool first. There is more to snorkeling than people think. It is worth doing it though.
