Don't open that video! It will give you a nasty virus! I would go with Alicante, simply because my own impression is that it is a more Spanish place...Marbella is more touristy. Living with a family, however, you probably won't be much affected by the tourists. You will probably be offered lots of seafood. More even than in the center of the country, it's a huge part of the diet. You'll get paella more than once. You'll probably be offered all sorts of sea oriented delicacies, rice dishes, soups made with beans, and ham. The ham in Spain is incredible! Interestingly, you can pretty much find foods from all regions, everywhere, although each region has their specialties...it's really not that large a country. Staying with a host family: In many other countries, it is a business for those who offer out their homes, so you may find that these people have guests all year, every year, unlike in the US, where it's often a one time thing. The company that places you pays them out of your fees. I just have this impression of Marbella being full of drunken Brits...and I had all these classmates who had lived in Alicante...and they raved about it!

Marbella is not a city, it is a large town. I'd choose Alicante, because in august Marbella usually gets swarmed with tourists. Also in Alicante there is more culture, history, places to see. You would have a much more authentic experience.

If you are just looking for excellent weather and long sandy beaches, both cities are worth visiting. However, if you want something more, i.e. festivals, culture, historical attractions, sightseeing opportunities, than Alicante is one of the best choices in the whole Spain. There are a lot of museums in Alicante, as well as archaeological sites. For example, this year you can see the famous Greek sculpture the Discobolus of Myron in MARQ – Archaeology Museum of Alicante. During June and July, there are several festivals: Las Hogueras de San Juan (St John's Bonfires), Alicante fireworks competition, Alicante Jazz Festival, Alicante Film Festival, Medieval Market and La Corrida de toros (bullfighting). Renting a car, you can also visit nearby towns like Elche and its palm forest or colorful Villajoyosa. There are also numerous thematic parks nearby in Benidorm, Elche and Murcia, such as Terra Mitica, Aqualandia, Terra Natura. Concerning the food, Alicante offers whatever you like: traditional Spanish kitchen, north-European food, as well as Italian, Mexican, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Argentinian and Turkish restaurants.

Marbella is too built up and touristy, alicante is less but still over touristy. Out of those two, I woudl say Alicante but if you can go anywhere esle i woudl say go to Valencia or Barcelona. Both are great cities, with much mroe culture than marbella or alicante, but also have nice beaches.
