In many Towns and cities across Spain - especially in the tourist areas - you will come across a lot of Restaurants that cater for every possibility, so Italian food, chinese, curries etc... are all widely available. If you are used to Italian food I am pretty certain that you will like Spanish food. Generally they are quite simple meals, but use high quality, local, fresh produce.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_cuisine It depends where you are going. In Barcelona, one local speciality is canalones. You can always find Italian style food in Spain. After all the Romans ruled Spain for hundreds of years. Be adventurous. If you don't like something, who said that you have to finish it!

They have extremely varied foods in Spain. One thing you MUST try is Paella, and it won't be hard to find it. Paella Valencia is about the most popular, and typical. Seafood is tremendously fresh all over, and eaten EVERYWHERE. It's especially good at the coasts, but nothing is so far that it's not fresh. There are also farmer stews, and hunter stews, and lamb, pork, veal, organ meats (go ahead, try it), vegetable dishes. Some other typical foods are Tortillas (egg dishes, sort of like omelets), hams (incredible!) and really great cheeses. Excellent wines and sodas... They do pasta and some simple sauces, as well. If you like Italian, you will probably like Spanish foods...they have some similarities, and some differences. And the sweets are just great!!! Go ahead...try everything!

Don't sweat it. I've taken groups of students to Spain before and they have never had trouble finding things that they enjoy eating. It's not at all like Mexican food and I think you will enjoy yourself. You can almost always find things that will appeal to your American Pallet but I want to encourage you to try a few things that are truly Spanish and you may find that you like them.
