How to get initial reputation on Stack Overflow with the new-user restrictions in place?

How can I increase my Stack Overflow reputation?

  • What are some tips and tricks to improve the Stack Overflow reputation of a user who is deeply passionate about learning new stuff?

  • Answer:

Start small. There are several ways to earn reputation, see (http://stackoverflow.com/help/whats-reputation) First read the FAQ thoroughly. When you understand how Stack OverFlow works, you will start earning reputation faster. First pick a topic or two that you know best. Try to be the first to answer. Always improve your answer by editing. Give good, detailed answers. Ask good questions. You can read Jon Skeet's post about how to ask a good question (http://tinyurl.com/so-hints). Never forget you are trying to help people. Be kind. There are people who knows more than you. Be humble. Be fair. If somebody already gave a good answer, upvote them. Correct newbie's mistakes, and help them get familiar to the Stack Overflow community.

Ask good question about a new technology. If the technology matures into a popular one, it will pay. Else not so much.

First, you have to invest a lot of time. If you want to learn new stuff, then you will be answering questions that you only know the basics of. Given the detailed nature of Stack Overflow questions, you need to be prepared to write test code and even deploy test applications. Or if possible, look for a topic you already know about, and seek out questions and topics that need help. Another approach I've seen is to become an expert, outside of Stack Overflow, like through technical blogging and maintaining open source projects. Then you will have the knowledge of answer the questions, and the reputation to get upvoted.

Answering questions correctly is the only way you can improve your reputation. According to me if you are truly passionate about learning new stuff, then you do not worry about getting reputation whatsoever. Reputation has nothing to do with your learning.

For me, increasing SO (Stack Overflow) reputation means:1. For answering We are master something to answer some kind of questions. We are an active user to help the community especially new guys. 2. For asking People & we have the same concern. Our questions help people fill their gaps or solve their problems. So how to get 1000 points first, then get more We need to master something, for example: Django Make your SO favorite tag (eg:  ) our homepage to open it everyday, or every 2 hours Try to become the first answerer, act quickly, then modify our answer to get perfection. If question that we don't know, don't go through, open the favorite tag panel, and ignore the tag that we don't want to see in the future. This will help we can answer our favorite question quicker. Ask new question for new technology, become the leader of new topic, we can easier get views and upvotes. Try integrate new releases of our favorite framework or library. If there is any issue ask it immediately, become the first announcer, people will have the same problem with us. Build our habit Ask what we don't know, be kind always. If we know a little bit, research it first, then asking if we still couldn't figure out the solution. Answer quickly, but carefully, focus on how much we can help people and community. Do it everyday, 200 points for 1 day then 0 for remaining ones is not good, try 3 actions daily (ask or answer) to get 30 points/day this month, then we increase to 40 points/day for the next month. Summary The higher reputation, the better quality answers we're going to receive in the future. Believe this: give more then we will get more. Become the leader, the more knowledge we have, the more influence and contribution to people, especially SO. Build habit to become that leader or influencer. Read the rules and help material It is important to understand what makes a good question or an appropriate answer. You should strive to constantly acquire information and  improve your understanding in this regard. You should also know in what ways you can gain reputation and that down-voting will cost you reputation. Answer questions as accurately and as frequently as possible. High quality, detailed answers are preferable, but there is also an advantage to being the first to answer the question. Refine your answers over time. If your answers become out of date or other users make comments, you should improve your answers to make them more accurate and correct. Ask good questions This one may be especially good for you if you are learning. As opposed to answers, you are not constrained by time. Formulate a detailed question with formatting, examples, and be clear about what the actual question is. Your question can gain votes and you can even answer your own question. You won't get points for accepting your own answer, but your answer can be up-voted.

I generally follow below steps:1) Understand question and ask questions if you want to clarify anything.2) Think about the solution and write your answer which suits the best what OP is looking for, but most importantly faster than other people.3) Edit your answer again and again to make your answer better than others.4) If someone suggests you something then consider his\her proposal. Thus point 2 would help you to let OP mark your answer as accepted answer thus +15 reputation. And point 3 & 4 would help you to impress users so they will give you up votes. Thus +10 * number of satisfied users.

Stackoverflow has a simple logic, each time you ask a good question or write a good answer, you get a chance to get up votes. These up votes earn you the points (reputations) as given below: For each up vote on your question you earn 5 points. For each up vote on  your answer you earn 10 points. If your answer is selected as the right answer (by the one who asked the question), you earn 15 points. Similarly, you lose your points (reputation) on down votes. Each down vote reduces your points by 2.
