What education is necessary to become a genetic engineer?

What is the next education path to become a software engineer?

• I've been interested in programming for years and am trying to find the best path for education in order to get a job in the field. Currently I have three options; a bachelors in computer science, an associates a degree from a great tech school or possibly a developer boot camp such as App Academy. I'm leaning more towards the two year degree but am curious if that plus self learned things would suffice to get a good job. A boot camp is somewhat not a good choice for me since I'd want a job in Wisconsin where that's most likely not accredited. A four year degree would also take longer and include much more debt for a bit more salary. So basically I'm just curious if a two year degree would be enough for not.

  I'm old school. I've done the bachelor thing, then I've worked as a web developer, in the course of which I've contributed to open source software. These days, I would recommend most people to follow the reversed path. Computer science won't teach you about technology. You'll learn how to program in various paradigms and get a sense of how everything works or should work, and without it you'll be somewhat of an ignorant. However, learning to program on one's own, taking Internet classes, participating in a boot camp, contributing to online projects will most likely feed your creative edge and prepare you for production work. Moving on to an undergraduate degree after a couple of years of experience could then boost your abilities and your motivation to tackle more complex problems. A CS degree won't give you anything to show for after graduation, but a good github profile built with a few trendy frameworks will.
