What are the effects of long-term interactive music therapy on young adults with severe autism?

Can music therapy treat autism?

  • it is said that autism cannot be cured but treated. can music therapy help treating autism

  • Answer:

I think that's great--but then again, I am a musician. It is true that many of us Autistic people like music, but don't force it on anyone. Just give the people some different CDs that they will like and a CD player--let them experiment.

The best way to "treat" an autistic is like any other human being. If they are into music, then great, but like all people, there are variances with regards to musical likes and dislikes. For some people, music therapy might cause too much stimulation to process with everything else going on and you will get the opposite of what you're trying to get at. Just like anyone else, you should find out what works for the individual and what does not. Then, tailor your teaching method/therapy to that learning style to get the full potential from that person. This may or may not have ANYTHING to do with music.
