What food is popular in Spain?

What were houses, schools, food, clothes, and family like in Spain in the 1930s?

  • I'm doing a report on Seville, Spain in the 1930s, so I'm looking more for things in Southern Spain, or Andalusia. What were interesting sights, celebrations, social life? ...show more

  • Answer:

Bombed out...oh, wait, the war didn't hit Sevilla. All the older buildings there are original, not rebuilt, as they are in a lot of other cities...somehow, the war managed to bypass Sevilla completely. Find any photos from the central part of the city, and you are there. I´ll bet, if you search "Feria de Sevilla 1935", and "Semana Santa 1935", or pick a year, you´ll find some good photos to help you out. Schools, I can't help you with at all. I'm not even sure my impressions of the schools today are accurate. Clothes would surely have been drab. The entire world was in a depression, and people really didn't make fancy clothing. Celebrations wound up being curtailed by the end of the war...I couldn't tell you exactly when, but for sure, anything that involved costumes and dressing up (masquerades - Carneval, etc.) were no longer legal...people were using them as an excuse to assassinate others. Check out the book Iberia, by James Michener. It has some really good information on the war, and that period.
