During Hurricane Sandy the sky was lighting up in shades of blue, green and yellow. It was not lightning.?

I live in Northern NJ and I saw them too!!! It's so scary. I was wondering what they were too. I don't think they were transformers being blown or lightning either. The whole sky was lighting up way too bright for those things to be the case. - Jill

12:34 AM in Ohio saw flashes of green light. Not sure what it is, trying to confirm an answer! It seemed to happen right after or during the huge gusts of wind.

I agree the sky would light up for about 5 -10 seconds and right after strong winds would form. I wonder what's the cause ?

We just saw it in MD too. For 2 secs the sky lit up blue. Turned on and off gently unlike lightning.

Here's the explanation but not the name: When the light hits the atmosphere the light is broken up, appearing in the sky as many different colors. When the "light" hits the clouds the water molecules refract AND reflect light causing the colours you have seen. The similar thing happens when you shine a ray of light into a prism. For ex. a rainbow. Hope this helps
