I spend on average $5000 a month. I don't drink, smoke, gamble or associate with women of ill repute. It all depends on how you want to live. Considering that 80% of the population lives on $125 a month........... or less, you could probably get by on $1000 US. That would give you 21 million, 6 million for rent, and 500'000 a day for everything else. Yep, you could do that, and still have change.

$30 a day will ensure you can have a comfortable stay in Vietnam - most days you'll find you'll spend less than this, but it's always nice to have a little extra to splash out on organised tours (for example, to Ha Long Bay etc etc). Food can cost you anywhere from $2 to $20 (in modest restaurants/street food), so you'll have no problem eating cheaply. Also, you can get budget accommodation for around $9 a night. The most money you'll spend will be on transport around the country and on any organised tours you decided to do. Hope this helps!
