When creating a website is it better to charge a subscription or make it free and charge for advertising?

I am creating a type of real estate website and I am wondering if charging a subscription fee would be better than charging an advertising fee. If I charge for advertising how many visitors would I need to be profitable to make 5-10k a month?

This is very general, but if it is a high-end real estate website or a niche site, that would favor subscriptions. If it is a site likely to get a large amount of page views, that would favor advertising -- I don't know the formula but cost per impressions are very low so you would need a VERY popular site to make 5-10k. As with all things real estate, commission-based fees are likely to be your best bet.

Depends on if they can get similar content elsewhere. If check http://www.drudgereport.com every day for news, but if they started charging I would just go to other news sites. On the other hand I pay for a subscription to Ad Age because they have content on there I have a hard time finding anywhere else. And for stuff like videos and music you will find some people who are willing to pay for it to be ad free and other who are willing to endure ads to keep it free. Think Spotify and Pandora and iTunes Radio.
