Start small like getting sponsored by a local shop.

You need to win some competitions. Look around for local stuff you can enter. Do you live within reach of a skate park that might host competitions? I lived near a kid who received some sponsorship when we were in high school. He won a couple of local competitions first, and that got him some recognition. I don't know if the youtube plan will pan out, like you said, they may not be watching.

You should push hard for you local skate shop to sponser you. Once you do well in competition then you can get other sponsers. You are going to have to sell yourself to get sponsored.
