Ok I can answer this question easy because about 2 years ago I was in your spot. I was thinking of the same things you were and ill answer them now. 1. Paintballs hurt more than airsoft BBs but don't get this mixed up decent airsoft stuff can shoot welts and does hurt but paintballs almost always leave welts 2. Depending on what, where and how you play makes the difference here. Paintball is a lot of fun even from the start with a semi crappy gun. Airsoft usually a lot slower to progress because its different in how games are played. This is a good example, in paintball teams are split up quickly and fast, games go usually quick and are always at a fast pace and despite what some say almost everyone in paintball have the same role. Airsoft is different, often in organized gameplay it may take some planning to get a game started this is because several reasons. First not everyone is the same in airsoft. Some are assault players, some are snipers, some are heavy gunners. This mode of play means usually teams will stick with each other and have a much more organized role of play. 3. This is were the killer of paintball is, money. The big problem with paintball is money. Paintballs are extreamly expensive even low quality guns will run a good $150. The ammo is so expensive that unless you own a really really high quality gun its not really worth the cost of ammo. On the other hand you will find that airsoft is very cheap for $150 you can have a tornoment level gun. Ammo is very very cheap for airsoft. Worrying about costs after the purchase of a gun is little or none. In the end this is how I will go. Airsoft- Pros/Cons Cheap to start at good level Many roles to play Cheap ammo Very fun once started in the sport Cons Dont hurt much (could be a pro if you dont like some pain) Slower start in the sport specific role most of the time less accepted for new comers Paintball Fast gameplay once you get a really good gun is very fun no real needed teams more pain cons very expensive decent guns and all ammo no real sniper/heavy gunner roles not much room for advances in role

As someone who has played with both, I would recommend Airsoft as the better to start with. Paintball is a very fun and exciting, but also expensive hobby. You can get an Airsoft gun at Wal-Mart for under $15 (I have 2 that cost me $14 and one I paid $10 for on sale), and the plastic pellets can be bought for a few dollars for a thousand or so. Paintball usually will hurt more as the velocity of the shots are often higher, although if you don't wear thick clothing Airsoft can be painful as well (though the shots usually feel about the same as or less than a bee sting, often its just a mild sting if the shot is from a distance.) Airsoft usually won't welt if you are shot from more than 15-20 feet away. Paintball is often considered more realistic since most guns are semi-automatic or automatic where as the cheaper Airsoft guns require the gun to be ****** after each shot (although fully automatic ones are available). You can get a fully automatic Airsoft rifle ($65), 2000 rounds ($14) and mask (not necessarily needed but recommended, $6) at Wal-Mart or online for about the price of a low-range paintball gun (most start between $70-$110 new), plus gear, helmet, paint, CO2, etc.

1. Paintball 2. Paintball, Airsoft (To me) 3. Paintball (But only because of ammunition and gas prices) Airsoft is more about realism than anything else. If it's realistic enough to train military and law enforcement units, it's good enough for people to stop bashing it. Paintball is more associated with teenagers due to the inability to lie about whether you're out or not and the stock power of the gun. There's highly competitive paintball play, and it's more widespread, but in the end, airsoft comes out the be cheaper and more realistic.

I play both, and I have a deal of knowledge about paintball. 1. Paintballs hurt more. (but they also leave a kick @$$ bruise.) 2. If you want to play around your house, Airsoft is the way to go, unless you have a lot of land. I play airsoft around my house in my neighborhood, and play paintball up at my friend's hunting property. They are both equally fun. And both equally easy to play on teams. 3. Paintball is definitely more expensive, but there is a higher quality of play. Its definitely a lot harder to cheat in paintball, and playing at actual paintball fields are a lot of fun.
