Is it possible to catch fish in a swampy lake?

If you have blue gile fish in a lake is it best to catch the bigger ones so they do not eat the little ones?

  • the lake I'm on wants catch and release and will plant more blue gile. Shouldn't the bigger ones be caught so they don't over populate and eat the smaller blue gile?

  • Answer:

I've never heard of the DNR actually "stocking" Bluegills in a lake. But anyway, take as many of the small ones out of the system and leave the bigger ones to breed.

keep 'em all and eat 'em

Bluegills are not cannibals OR predatory-fish. They WILL NOT EAT EACHOTHER!!! Catching & keeping the big-ones WILL, however, reduce the BREEDING population of Blues, & eventually help to reduce their numbers.

If there is a stocking program on the lake, you wouldn't have to worry about bluegill eating each other. A large bluegill only has a mouth about the size of a dime. The stocked bluegill could be as small as 2" long and the larger ones wouldn't be able to eat them.

catch the smaller ones, they taste better

In my opinion, blue gills suck for fish. They should all be caught and gutted, then eaten. Blue gills suck aaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh... do you even bother catching such a stupid fish? Now BASS, that's a fun fish to catch. Try it you will have a blast.
