I would recomend the king kat 2. They are very dependable rods.

I have a med. action Ugly Stick, and have used a couple of different reels on it. I prefer spinning reels, but that is just me... I would say go for the king kat, but unless you need it, go for a smaller line. 20 lb. test is pretty heavy duty, and if it is prespooled, you may wish to respool it with your own line anyway. Who knows how long some of that has been on. The king kat has a bigger spool, which means more line... thus less respooling when line breaks, tangles etc. The rod selection should depend on what you are going to be doing with it. a hard rod is going to be good for trolling or heavy fishing, where as a medium action is a great all around rod. The longer the rod is, the farther it is going to cast a lure if you are shore fishing, or trying to get to that honey hole.

I would go with the ugly stick as they are almost impossible too break and come with a five year gaurentee as opposed too the average 1 year. You dont mention what type of fish that you are going for and that makes all of the difference in the world when sellecting a rod. Trout for example need a rod that will except 4 to 6 lb line And catfish need line of between 10 and 20 lb line and if you are going deep sea fishing you will need 20 to 40 lb line just in case you run into some larger fish that you expect. If you are goung Tuna Fishing I would get up too 100 lb line as some tuna get too be over 300lbs. The minimum weight I would use for tuna is 80 lb.

Go for a light action rod, unless you're just fishing for bass, but even then...
