What are the best fishing lakes in western Washington?

How do you go ice fishing?

  • I have never been ice fishing. I live in Spokane, Washington, mainly around small lakes and ponds. I have only fished a couple of times - trout, and very lucky with them! - and I have ...show more

I won't repeat any of the great info you have. Just to add to the person who recommended tips ups. This is the most fun. I've never heard of roaches, but I use shiners which are also a type of minnow. Typically larger shiners if I'm fishing for pike or musky. Make sure you spool your line correctly, and set the tip ups properly. Always pull your spool to make sure it is set so that a strike will set your flag. One of the biggest (and dumbest) mistakes I made on one of my first trips out was having about half of my tip ups set backwards. Fish had struck on all of them but they got away because the flag never went off. This may sound complicated, but once you buy a tip up and have it in your hands to see how it works, you'll get it. Also, use a heavy sinker to get your line to the bottom. Then bring it up 1-3 feet. Once you have it set, mark the line up towards the spool so you'll know the depth and won't have to re-measure when you catch a fish. After you have the line measured then remove the heavy sinker and add your bait. That along with the other answers, should get you well on your way.

First, you need a way to drill a hole thru the ice. Hand augers work well; I have a 6" diameter auger and have used it for 20 yrs. They go up to about 14" diameter on the gas powered models. A skimmer is needed to get the slush out of the hole you just drilled. It looks like a ladle with holes in it. Light line; buy some specifically made for ice fishing and put it on a UL spinning reel. Use ice fishing jigs for panfish, sometimes tipped with a wiggler or eurolarvae, jigging spoons tipped with a minnow head for walleyes and such. Gotta have a lot of patience; move to another spot after about 20 min if you dont have a bite.....good luck!

Rod setup - use a ultra lite very soft tip with 2lb test line in and ice line like berkley micro.I use this method while standing or jigging for certain fish a longer rod is much better for this type of fishing so a 36" to a 48" rod works good. The longer rod allows you to work a larger fish better if needed you can stick rod into hole so not have a cut off. Or you can buy a standard ice rod like a schooley rod pre rigged with spool typr reel line a spring bobber and a small ice jig tip it with a wax worm, spike or mousie. The spring bobber is your strike indicator! Tip ups are fun to use but are more passive with the action you wait for the strike to happen! Tools needed- ice spoon, auger or chisel! Ice skimmer mittons for your hands, bucket to sit on and carry supplies in and take fish home in. Warm clothing! I carry a 50' rope looped on the end a board with nails in it,ice whistle and picks of life with me for safety. The nail board is for a foot brace if needed to pull someone from the water. My friends say I have to much with me but I want to eat the fish I may catch not swim with them.Safety always comes first while icefishing!!!! Safe ice is hard to determine so all I will say is to use good judgement and never fish alone!

first you need good ice, i would suggest going out with someone who can read ice until you start to understand that. then you just need to start making holes in the ice.jigging and tip ups are probably some of the most popular ways to do it.and lastly remember that beer floats so and extra hole in the ice makes the words greatest fridge and your ice scoop works great to fish em out

I use tip-ups. Google tip-up so that you can see what they look like. Theres several different designs, each harder to describe than the next. We put a 50 yard spool of 30 pound braid on the tip up reel. Then buy a 30 test leader, (Black... any color but silver, that would easily disappear into the snow if dropped) Then, a treble hook on the end of the leader. Next, snap on a sinker or two, so that the bait which I will cover in a second, is about three feet from the ground. Then theres the bait. When you tip up fish, the best for bass or bigger fish is roaches if you ask me. Maggots work for panfish, but you'll probably need a COMPLETELY different setup for this. You hook the roach just below the spine, which sounds painful but keeps them alive surprisingly. Then you set the tip up and wait. In Illinois, you are allowed three of these per license, at least last I checked. 5 bucks is a reasonable price for a cheap one, and thats what I buy. Dont buy tip ups from bait shops. Ive always found them at least three times the price of one at a Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas or Gander Mountain. Make sure the ice is several inches thick, I dont go out unless its at least 5. NEVER EVER EVER dump your roaches into the lake. They are not naturally occuring and can detroy the lakes ecosystem. Throw them in the snow, or give them to another fishermen. Also, when I say roach i dont mean cockroach for those who aren't aware. Its a shiner, sorta like a shad. Dress warm.

Bless your heart! I don't go fishing when it is freezing out. I just live my family life working all day and drinking whisky, rum, or beer and cursing at night, until the spring time fishing begins in IN. :D
