  • Answer:

When you cast a baitcaster you have to slow the spool so it doesn't spin faster than the line is coming out. Otherwise you get a backlash -- a messy tangle inside the reel. There should be a tension knob on the side of the reel you can tighten up to do this. You can also use your thumb to slow the spool (it's what we do in saltwater where the reels don't have the tension knob). Casting is usually easier with a fuller spool, and if there are kinks in the line, that increases the chance of a backlash. The other thing is that it takes some practice to cast. Start out by trying to lob the bait only a few feet, and as you get a feel for it, increase the distance.

you have to adjust your tension setting you want it to were the lure falls slow enough that when it hits the ground that it doesnt get any loops in the line. If you have comcast digital cable go to sports and fitness, the sportskool and bass fishing and watch the shows under that. Whats my line should help.

its called backlash. i would go back to the store you bought it from and ask questions as to how to cast with a baitcast reel.

Pretty hard to string line wrong. I think you need to tighten up the slack in your reel and not try to launch it ten miles out to sea when you cast....slow down when you cast. Sometimes also when the reel is overfilled, that can cause some hellacious tangles as well...

Try a 1/2 oz weight and make short casts until you find the proper setting. Make incremental adjustments to your centrifugal (and magnetic brake if so equipped) brake. Once you get the right adjustment you can make long casts with more confidence. Like those others that have posted ahead of me, you have got to use your thumb on the spool of the reel during the cast to maintain the speed of the spool. This is especially important to learn for baitcast reels without a magnetic brake. I know it gets discouraging but with practice you will be using this reel with confidence. Having the proper line will greatly put you ahead of the learning curve. Try 17-20 lb mono until you get the hang of it. Besides being good line for bass fishing, it is easier to pick out those "bird nests" from your reel. Braid or line smaller than 14 lb test can be a reel pain in the rear. Just remember even the top professionals make those same "reel overruns" you are making.

There is a backlash adjustment on your reel...play with it a little...in the mean time when you cast....use your thumb as a break..that way it won't tangle when the lure hits the water....I like spinning reels myself but bait casters definitely have their purpose...oh yeah catch and release whenever you can....
