What are a few good tips for catching carp?

How do i catch carp fish?

  • i have a few questions about catching carp. How many pounds does my line need to be? What is good bait? What are some good tips? And are they smart?

  • Answer:

Catching carp isn't hard if your equipped correctly. The reason why many Americans don't fish for carp is because there are few accidental hook-ups when they are fishing for other species. (With exception to cat fishing, as cat fish and carp fishing are pretty similar.) Carp can be caught simply by putting a piece of corn or berry on a hook and casting it out at fish they see swimming by. This works occassionally, but there are much better ways to fish for them. Go to the link in my source box, it explains the "hair rig". They are one of the best ways to fish for carp there is and it's really not that hard. This is how I learned to catch carp with and what I still use. I like to use light setups with all types of fishing so I only use 8 lb test and bass rods. But if you are fishing for big, 20 pound carp, or fishing in places where there are a lot of snags, you may want a slightly heavier pole and 15+ pound line. Definently bait small areas a day or so before you fish to get the fish adjusted to feeding on whatever your throwing in. I sell hair rigs on ebay so I included that link also if you interested. If you do buy some tell me it's the guy from yahoo and i'll tie you a few extra.

Don't use any higher than 12 or 14 lb. test. Carp are very smart fish and are line shy. 8 or 10 lb. test should be enough. But upgrade to 12 just in case. There are many baits for carp including worms, dough ball, corn, and marshmallows. I have the best luck with dough ball. I make my own out of peanut butter, maple syrup, bread, and cinnamon. If you don't feel like making dough ball just use bread. It works fine. No huge rods and reels are needed i use bass sized rods and reels. It works fine. Look for carp around deep-water structure.
