What is your favorite free throw routine?

What is your favorite lure to throw in the cold?fishing?

  • im talkin low 40's water temps.....im goin fishing tomorrow and just wondering some of your favorite lures to throw this time.....mines a jig

  • Answer:

The water here are in the mid 40s now...If I had my license (gonna get it tomorrow I think, I know, I'm slacking), I'd be out throwing a crankbait of some sort, either a squarebill or a lipless crank in crawfish coloring, a jig n pig or a suspending jerkbait. I'd make a long cast and do slow jerks...pause up to 30 seconds between jerks. For trout, I'd be throwing either a fly of some sort, or some sort of small jerkbait like an HD trout, Rapala, etc.

Jerkbaits and jigs really slowly! I let my jerkbait fall for about 5-10 sec. Then Jerk it about 5-6 times and let it sit and sink. Most bass will hit it right when it starts jerking or right on the fall. The jig however I just drag it across the bottom for the big boys. I dont seem to catch as many fish on the jig because its a bigger bait which means bigger bass. With the jerkbait any size bass with strike at it. So all in all just fish slowly and have time to wait for a strike.

I like to drag jigs, work jerkbaits really slow, and even crawl crankbaits above rocks and brush piles.

I wait for about two or three weeks after ice off. Then for one day throw a large white spinner bait 3/8 or 1/2 ounce. It's fun cause you must throw it as far as you can, the fish hit the bait way out at the end of the cast. These are the biggest heaviest bass ( generally 6 - 8 pounds ) of the year, and to have a long fight from that long distance is a blast. I catch about a dozen before I have my fill. About 3 hours. Then have to change out the stretched line. BUT, worth it. ( I usually fish only private lakes on farms and on people's properties ) I have so many places I can fish like that. All fish are carefully returned.

I would go with a jig and a minnow worked real slow

BOBBER

Small crankbaits or jig pig

Crankbait of course!

Hmm... never fished in water that cold. But the cold water I do fish in (mid- to high-50s is cold in SoCal lulz), nothing beats a slowly worked 3/4-ounce football jig with a big craw trailer or a finesse worm on a drop shot rig.
