How do you use a baitcasting reel?

Would it be bad to buy my 15 year old son a expansive baitcasting reel to get use to for begining?

  • Hello im buying my 15 year old an axpensive baitcasting reel for him to practice on and get use to baitcasting would it be bad to buy him an axpensive one?

  • Answer:

As others got at, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. A better quality baitcaster is actually easier to get used to than a "cheapo" combo from Walmart or something. Be sure he takes care of it, and he will be able to use it for many years to come.

Absolutely. Just don't buy him an expensive car... for your wallets sake.

Nothing wrong with buying an expensive reel , But expect to go through lots of line before he gets it figured out...

Yeah, get him a good one so it will be easier to learn. I'd get him something along the lines of a 4600C3 for Bass.

if he's ready to step up to baitcasting, get him a good one. don't know what is "expensive" to you, but I think something like Daiwa PT100, around $70, should be good enough. I don't see any point in making him learn on a bubble-pack reel -- just think it would do more harm than good.

Well, let's put it this way: Do you think a good first car is a Ferrari or a Toyota? In terms of the fish: they don't care what kind of rod and reel you are using.

trunorth

nope. Be nice and get him the good one.

FourZeroTwo

yes...If he is just starting get him a less expensive one and when he gets better buy him a more expensive one...

With today's technology in reels it would probably be easier for your 15 year old to learn faster with a better reel. The older models or cheaper ones will take awhile to learn to prevent back lashes and distance casting. This would only frustrate the teen after a million back lashes and you'll soon find yourself with a reel collecting cob webs. Get the best you can afford that fits your teens hands and matches the rod itself for balance. Like when you buy clothes, you get what fits you. The same goes for fishing gear, get what fits and this will guarantee many years of use. Besides this, practice makes perfect. Set up targets around an area for the teen to cast to. Make them different sizes to keep things interesting. Join in on the fun to also touch up on casting and make a day of it. ~good luck catchin'
