What bait do I use to catch Bluegill?

a 2 inch long peace of nightcrawler or a whole panfish worm on a small aberdeen hook, with a split shot (sinker) about 6 inches above the hook, and a bobber... make shure the hook point is exposed ... nothing is better good luck- check out the diagram l - line l l 0 -bobber l l l o - sinker l J - hook

I think fishing for bluegill or any other pan-fish is really fun. They may not be the biggest fish in the lake but you can almost always catch them. There are a couple ways I think work the best. 1. Use an ultralight rod with 2-3 lbs. test on it, I just buy some cajun line from my local Walmart. You can get a cheap open faced reel from there too. You will need small crimp weights to help you cast further, a Bobber to let you know when a fish is checking out your bait, and a hook, I like to use eagle claw plain worm shanks. Set your line so that your Bobber will suspend the line under it above the bottom of where your fishing. The hook will be tied to them bottom of the line with a weight crimped a few inches above the hook. Cast you line close to a bank most of the bluegill in the lake look for cover like a fallen log or some weeds, or they might hang out in a sheltered little bay. They will look for shade during the hot day. For bait I just use fresh live worms hook it on so that it is on the hook several times but has a portion hanging off. If it is just a bundle of worm it doesn't look very enticing to the fish. IMPORTANT: if you see your bobber bouncing up and down do not try to set the hook right away, it might be small bait fish nibbling at your bait or the bluegill just checking it out. If you see the bobber go under and take off pull back to set the hook in his mouth. Don't yank too hard he's not a 12 lb bass and you might rip the hook out of his mouth. 2. If you have a nice overhang that could provide shelter and cover you can take your bobber off and jig the worm, which means to work it left and right bouncing it up and down across the bottom of the lake. When they hit it it will be quick and hard and you will be able to tell you have a fish on the other end of the line.

Blue gill have to be the least intelligent fish I know lol so pretty much any thing works... I once caught a few without bait... Just have to get them when their hungry. But as far as bait goes- don't waste your money on lures or anything to flashy. Live worms really do work the best but any meat works really...

I once used paper... Bread works. Worms work (any kind of worm, go lift some rocks/logs). Hot dogs have worked for me... Crickets, etc... Once, I fished in this spot almost a whole summer with tiny bread balls on small hooks. One day my mom got mad at me for stealing all her bread. So I took a white RUBBER worm, and cut it up into little pieces, passed them out to my friends and for days we caught perch/blue gill on them. I guess the fish were trained to look for white. -That was 13 years ago... Ah forgot to add, if you're fishing with crickets... Don't use the black crickets. For some reason they NEVER work. But all species of grasshoppers work too...
