Trilene Xt or Trilene smooth casting are both very good and very well priced. Right now I have smooth casting on my poles and have not any problems with tangling or fraying of the line.

If you don't fish that often, I would say spend a little extra $$ on some Spiderwire braid. It will last forever. I have a reel that's had the same Spiderwire on it for 10+ years and it's still in great condition. My second choice would be the Cajun Red mono. As far as standard, cheaper lines go, you can't go wrong with Trilene Big Game.

You get what you pay for with line. The more you pay the better the line. Line type depends on what kind of fishing you are going to do. If im fishing heavy timber for bass, in murky water, I prefer braided. If im fishing shallow clear rivers for smallmouth or trout, I prefer a very light Flourocarbon line like vanish. I really like the vanish flourocarbons that have come out, great line at a pretty reasonable price. I saw someone mention the "cajun red" line. Personally, I would stay away from that crap. The "selling point" is its invisible. The problem with that is and what they dont tell you is that yes Red is invisible underwater, however it is only invisible after about 12 feet deep. Some fishing is done deeper than that, however quite a bit of fishing is done much shallower. The red thing is just a marketing ploy. Most lines are invisable after 12 or so feet. You ever see any pro fishermen use red line?

Trilene is the best I prefer the XL for castability and the XT if I am fishing in brush or rocks

My favorite line to use for monofilament is 8 to 10lbs test RED CAJUN and my favorite line to use for braided is POWER PRO. Ever since i've tried the braided line,I haven't gone back to using monofilament! I also recommend trying FIRE LINE,it's just as good as the POWER PRO!(I buy whatever is cheaper@ the store)
