I agree that you should leave your dog at home for short vacations but if it is an extended vacation then traveling with your pet makes sense. You will need this to enter Mexico: An international health certificate issued and dated not more than a few days before your arrival in Mexico. (I believe 10 days is the cut off but you will want to check that). You will need proof of a rabies vaccination at least 30 days old but not more than a year old. Your health certificate should indicate that your pet has been treated with the antiparasitic medication Ivermectin. Do yourself a favor and take the collection of documents above and have them translated into Spanish. Bring multiple copies in both English for your airline and Spanish for customs and Mexican officials. Make 100% sure that you have all your papers in order. If you do not, customs will not allow your pet into the country. You may need to pay to have a local vet come to the airport an re-administer all your pet's shots again if you cannot prove they are up to date. Not only is this expensive, but it is potentially dangerous for your dog. Returning to the USA: When you return home you will again need to visit a licensed vet in Mexico. You will need to again get an international health certificate issued and dated not more than a few days before your arrival back in the USA. Not all states or airlines require this but some do so it's just easier to get it done. You should not need to vaccinate your dog for rabies unless more than one year has lapsed since the original shot. I know some rabies vaccines are good for 3 years but you are still going to need a shot within that one year window even if your dog had the 3 year shot. You will likely want to translate the international health certificate issued in Mexico into English. It can be a big cost to travel with your pet and it can be very stressful on your pet. If you are going on a short vacation then it really is not worth it in both terms of price and stress on your pet to bring them with you. I have only flown into and out of Cancun and Merida with pets. Cancun is much better for importing and exporting animals.
