What are the fields in IIT [India]?

Does the IIT brand name help in getting into a good college outside the country for pursuing an M.S ?

  From my experience, I can say that IITs definitely have a good reputation in the US. They are known as the foremost engineering colleges in India. And that is not for no reason. If you think about all successful Indians from an engineering field, a big fraction of them would be IITians. About the second part, the most politically correct answer is that the admission process in most top universities assess your potential as an individual and hence your background should not matter given that all the other parameters are the same. But since an application would never provide all the necessary information needed for the decision, it may sometimes happen that being from an IIT helps. That is both because IITs do have a strong educational system which makes you a well-rounded engineer and IIT alumni have made a lasting impression on these institutes in the past.
