If it supports a structure above it - it's a loadbearing wall. Even if there is no brickwork above it, it may still be needed to hold an exterior wall, or take a load from the roof. The safest way is to employ a building surveyor - who will tell you if it can be removed or not. Most of the time they can be - but may require an RSJ installed instead, which can be neatly boxed in with plasterboard. Just ask advice before breaking anything - and remember to use proper roof suppotrs while doing the work.

find someone from a construction company and have them come out and take a look at it.

You gotta go to city hall they keep records of the original building design that was submitted for permit and city inspection

house plans can be found at your county records. The easiest way is to hire a contractor or building inspector. Making modifications like that requires certain permits and you have to meet current building codes.
