You can use really rough sandpaper. Turn the pencil as you go.

Sandpaper works great. Just lay the sandpaper on a flat surface and rub the pencil back and forth at an angle. You'll get a nice sharp point. Btw, they don't use lead in pencils. Lead is poisonous. They use graphite mixed with a clay binder..

You need a sharpish knife, rest it on the pencil just behind the area thats been sharpened already. using your thumb slowly and gently push down and out towards where you want the point do this all around the edge of the pencil until the lead is showing and is good enough to use you may make your pencil square instead of round (cone shaped) at the end but it works good !Be careful, go slowly and please don't cut yourself!! Practice makes perfect, do it a couple of times and you will never need a sharpener again!

use a knife /old style

With Knife or Blade: 1) Hold the pencil, pointing the lead tip away from your body, with your non-dominant hand. 2) Place the blade about an inch above the lead at a 45 degree angle. Point the blade away from your body! 3) Apply light pressure and stroke the blade outward and down. 4) Rotate the pencil with each stroke to allow for maximum lead exposure. 5) Finish by cleaning up the pencil shavings. (Do this over a rubbish bin to minimize cleanup.) 6) Wipe the blade clean of lead and debris. With Sand Paper: 1) Buy a fine sandpaper that comes in sheets or in a block. They can both be used to the same result, and the difference is merely due to preference. These can be found in your local hardware store or hobby store. 2) Trim the excess of the lead off the pencil with a sharp blade, knife or scissors. Do this carefully to avoid slicing into your fingers, or damaging your drawing pencils to the point of destruction. This helps the sandpaper sharpen the fine point of your pencil for the best end results. 3) Hold the tip of a sandpaper sheet between your thumb and forefinger, or hold a sandpaper block on the table for stability. If you are using a block, make sure you have some sort of rough mat down to avoid slippage. 4) Use the other hand to hold the pencil for sharpening. Rub the tip of the pencil in the pouch created by your fingers and the sandpaper sheet, or rub the tip of the pencil on the sandpaper block. 5) Check your progress every few seconds to ensure that you sharpen your pencil to the exact point you need with sandpaper. With Paper Wrapped Charcoal: This is a very neat way to sharpen charcoal pencils. Simply pull back the string a little then peel off a roll of paper. The best thing about this method is you are left with the 'bullet point' style of sharpened pencil, very nice! Hope this helps!
