Will The Game of Thrones show be paused after season 5?

    If they stick to the seven-season structure that was discussed in an interview with one of the producers a couple of weeks ago, they'll probably finish the third book late in season 4 and start adding in some stuff from the fourth and fifth books, and then finish the fourth and fifth books in season 5. For anyone scoffing at that, remember that at one time, they were the same book, and that both of them have quite a bit of fluff. If they can squeeze in some material at the end of season 4 and use their time judiciously, they can make it work. That would put season 6, and the sixth book, in 2016. Barring a calamity, the book should be out by then and/or Martin can provide information necessary to film the series. The showrunners have the major info they need to finish the series independently of the books, even if they do overtake them. They are not going to pause the TV series while the books catch up.

I saw the producers talking about a 9 season TV run also.   My best guess is that book 6 comes out in late 2015/early 2016, book 7 in 2019/2020 and book 8 (I know there are only supposed to be 7, but we'll see, I'm not convinced we are two books from done) in 2023? If you go roughly 1/2 a book a season a year that has: 2014 - 3b (4) 2015 - 4a (5) 2016 - 4b (6) 2017 - 5a (7) 2018 - 5b (8) 2019 - 6a (9) 2020 - 6b (10) 2021 - 7a (11) 2022 - 7b (12) 2023 - 8a (13) 2024 - 8b (14 and final) Of course maybe they'll compress some of the series (as others pointed out 4 and 5 are in parallel and could probably do those 2 books together in 2 seasons, maybe 3, instead of 4 seasons).  Also the TV series needs to film the year before it airs, but it can film before the book comes out.  It could, in theory, even air before the book comes out but I doubt anyone wants that.  But who knows maybe everyone will be reading ebooks on their Glass and watching "TV" on their Glass and the book and episodes will be available for binge consumption at the same time?

George Martin has given the producers details for the next book and George Martin has already read chapters of his next book at cons. There is enough material already to TVise the next books even if George Martin becomes unavailable. Hence, there will be content for more seasons. Commercially, Game of Thrones is successful enough that they will not want to stop it for any reason. Hence, HBO Game of Thrones will continue.

As far as I know, the 3rd book is split in 2 seasons and may be they would do that for 4th and 5th book too hence giving themselves a lot of time before Martin competes the books.

There may be the case that the series will get paused once it runs out on the books. Currently 3 books has been used up in 4 series.Once 2 more novels are pictured, then they will have to pause it for the author to complete the series as there are still 2 books pending to complete the series. And it would be unfair to the author if they go ahead and finish the series before the books are published.
